The Holy Mass (3)

[Page-1] [Page-2] [Page 3]

After a low Mass, starting with Pope Leo 13th, then Pope Pius X, and Pope Pius XI after him, asked that the following be offered. The priest kneels on the steps before the altar and leads the faithful in these prayers.

The Ave (Hail Mary)
(repeated three times)

(P): Ave Maria, gratia plena, Dominus tecum; benedicta tu in mulieribus, et benedictus fructus ventris tui, Jesus.

P: Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.

All the faithful present Respond/reply (R): Sancta Maria, Mater Dei, ora pro nobis peccatoribus, nunc et in hora mortis nostrae. Amen.

R: Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Salve Regina (Hail, Holy Queen)

Priest and faithful say together (All): Salve Regina, Mater misericordiae; vita dulcedo et spes nostra, salve.

All: Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of mercy; our life, our sweetness and our hope. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve. To thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this vale of tears. Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy towards us. And after this our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus.

Everyone strikes their breast three times as they say:

(All): O clemens, o pia, o dulcis Virgo Maria!

All: O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary!

And then the priest continues:

(P): Ora pro nobis, sancta Dei Genitrix.

P: Pray for us, O holy Mother of God.

(R): Ut digni efficiamur promissionibus Christi.

R: That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

O God, Our Refuge and Our Strength

(P): Oremus.

  P: Let us pray.

O God, our refuge and our strength, look down in mercy on Thy people who cry to Thee; and by the intercession of the glorious and Immaculate Virgin Mary, Mother of God, of St. Joseph, her spouse, of Thy blessed apostles Peter and Paul, and of all the Saints, graciously hear our prayers for the conversion of sinners, and for the freedom and exaltation of Holy Mother Church. Through the same Christ our Lord.

(R): Amen.

  R: Amen.

Prayer to the Archangel, St. Michael

(All): Sante Michael Archangele, defende nos in proelio; contra nequitiam et insidias diaboli esto praesidium. Imperet illi Deus, supplices deprecamur: tuque, Princeps militiae caelestis, Satanam aliosque spiritus malignos, qui ad perditionem animarum pervagantur in mundo, divina virtute in infernum detrude.

All: St. Michael, the archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray. And do thou, prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who roam the world seeking the ruin of souls.

(R): Amen.

  R: Amen.

Invocation of The Sacred Heart

This invocation was added by Pope Pius X to the prayers, above, instituted by Pope Leo 13th.
(repeated three times)

(P): Cor Jesu sacratissimum.

P: Most Sacred Heart of Jesus.

(R): Miserere nobis.

  R: Have mercy on us.
