Polemic On the Novus Ordo
"And we charge you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,
that you withdraw yourselves from every brother walking disorderly,
and not according to the tradition which they have received of us."
2 Thessalonians 3:6
General
- The liturgy / Mass is an adornment of the bride of Christ, His Church.
- The traditional Mass, enriched and matured by centuries of Sacred Tradition was codified, not invented, by Pope Saint Pius V,; whereas the Novus Ordo was constructed by a group of men, including six Protestant ministers and a 33rd degree Freemason - Msgr. Annibale Bugnini, who was later exiled from the Vatican because of his ties with Freemasonry.
- "If anyone says that the received and approved rites of the Catholic Church.. may be changed by any pastor of the Churches to any new ones: let him be anathema."
-- Council of Trent, Canon 13 on the Sacraments, Session VII, March 3, 1547
- The Novus Ordo embodies numerous errors condemned by Pope Saint Pius V and Pope Pius XII., see the Language seciton below.
- All seven sacraments have been changed according to the "spirit" of Vatican II.
- With the Novus Ordo comes a new; calendar, catechism, Code of Canon Law, hymns, morality, prayers, sacraments, oreientation (from God to man), Mass, Bible. In summary, a NEW Church and Faith.... a complete rejection of the old.
- The Novus Ordo, although appearing to conform to the dispositions of Vatican Council II, in reality opposes it's instructions, since the Council itself declared it's desire to conserve and promote the Traditional Rite.
- Pope Paul VI, when promulgating the Novus Ordo, himself declared. "The rite ... by itself is NOT a dogmatic definition ..." (11/19/69)
unconfirmed ->: The promulgation of the Novus Ordo was never entered in the Actae Sanctae Sedis (the official acts of the Holy See)
- The Novus Ordo no longer constitutes a vertical worship between God and man, but rather a horizontal worship between man and man.
- English martyrs died because the would not participate in a Mass such as the Novus Ordo. The Novus Ordo follows the format of Cranmer's heretical Anglican Mass and is similiar to Luther's Mass.
- God rejected Cain's offering of "the fruits of the earth" as "gifts to the Lord". The Novus Ordo, in like manner, does not offer Christ the immolated Victim, but the "the fruits of the earth".
Genesis 4
3 And it came to pass after many days, that Cain offered, of the fruits of the earth, gifts to the Lord.
4 Abel also offered of the firstlings of his flock, and of their fat: and the Lord had respect to Abel, and to his offerings.
5 But to Cain and his offerings He had no respect:
- The abolition of the Traditional Mass recalls the prophecy of Daniel 8:12: "And he was given power against the perpetual sacrifice because of the sins of the people" and the observation of Saint Alphonsus de Liguori that because the Mass is the best and most beautiful thing which exists in the Church here below, the devil has always tried by means of heretics to deprive us of it.
- The Novus Ordo was made in accordance with the Protestant definition of the Mass:
"The Lord's Supper or Mass is a sacred assembly of the people of God which gathers together under the presidence of the priest to celebrate the memorial of the Lord."
--
Par. 7, Introduction to the New Missal, defining the Novus Ordo, 4/6/69)
- We are faced with the dilemma: either we become Protestantized by worshipping with the Novus Ordo, or else we preserve our Catholic Faith by adhering faithfully to the traditional Mass, the "Mass of All Time."
- The intrinsic beauty of the Traditional Mass attracts souls by itself; whereas the Novus Ordo, lacking any attractiveness of its own, has to invent novelties and entertainments in order to appeal to the people.
- Heresy, or whatever clearly favors heresy, cannot be a matter for obedience. Obedience is at the service of Faith and not Faith at the service of obedience! In this case then, "One must obey God before men." (Acts 5:29)
The Novus Ordo
ANALOGY
Some would ask the question, "Why attack the Novus Ordo? Why not recommend the good points of the Old Mass?" To this must be answered, people who find themselves in a dangerous and grave situation should be shown why they are accepting error, not just being shown a better way.
- The best defense is a good offense.
- Truth should not be hidden, especially for those who accept error - whether tenaciously or by ignorance.
- If our souls were sick, the Old Mass gives us medicine to overcome our illness, whereas, the Novus Ordo substitues a placebo, or worse, a poison.
- If a man were in a canoe in the middle of an ocean and a great storm were coming, would you tell him...
- the greatness of the boat he is in, or
- get out of the canoe or you will surely die.
ARCHITECTURE
- In most cases, the priest no longer "offers the sacrifice" on an altar. The Altar is indicative of sacrifice. A table is employed to share a "meal",.
- The words employed suggest it is a memorial and not a sacrifice. At best, the sacrifice is obscured.
- The altar and tabernacle are now separated, thus marking a division between [Christ in His priest and The Sacrifice on the altar], from [Christ in His Real Presence in the tabernacle], "two things which of their very nature, must remain together." -- Pope Pius XII
- In none of the three new Eucharistic Prayers of the Novus Ordo is there any reference to the state of suffering of those who have died, thus undermining faith in the redemptive nature of the Sacrifice.
--
Cardinal Ottavianni
- In the Libera Nos of the Novus Ordo, the Blessed Virgin, the Apostles and all the Saints are no longer mentioned; their intercession are thus no longer asked, even in time of peril.
--
Cardinal Ottavianni
- Most Novus Ordo churches have been re-ordered to reflect their neo-Protestant beliefs, destroying altar-rails, replacing the high altar with a simple table, moving the tabernacle into a corner (no longer central in the architecture), building a nice big chair for the "presider", making it increasingly impossible to celebrate a Catholic Mass in a Catholic atmosphere. Moreover, vestments, chalices and other important features of the Mass have been cheapened.
- The practice of altar girls and women readers obscures Catholic theology on the distinct roles of the sexes: though equal in dignity, are very different physically, socially and in their intended vocations. Moreover, having the laity enter the sanctuary during Mass inevitably reduces the sacredness of the sanctuary, the nature of the priesthood and questions the presence of the Almighty God Himself in the tabernacle.
- The church is a reflection of the faith of the people. The Novus Ordo church is bear, plain, banal and modern. The Traditional churches are replete with beauty, statues, pictures, with an altar rail seperating the Priest/sanctuary from the people/nave.
- Because of the inherent ambiguity, the Novus Ordo pretends to please Catholics while pleasing Protestants; thus it is "double-tongued" and offensive to God who abhors any kind of hypocrisy: "Cursed be ... the double-tongued for they destroy the peace of many." (Sirach 28:13)
FRUITS
Guided by the words of our Lord: "By their fruits you shall know them". (Matt 7:20)
- In less than seven years after the introduction of the Novus Ordo, priests in the world decreased from 413,438 to 243,307 - almost 50%! (Holy See Statistics)
- Fruits of the Novus Ordo are:
- 30% decrease in Sunday Mass attendance in U.S. (NY Times 5/24/75),
- 43% decrease in France (Cardinal Marty),
- 50% decrease in Holland (NY Times 1/5/76).
- Statistics show a great decrease in conversions to Catholicism following the use of the Novus Ordo. Conversions, which were up to 100,000 a year in the U.S., have decreased to less than 10,000! And the number of people leaving the Church far exceeds those coming in.
- Why Not to Attend the Novus Ordo (good points, questionable conclusions, i.e. invalid)
- Why the Traditional Latin Mass?
LAITY
- Physical participation (doing) is placed over spiritual participation (will and intellect). The constant need to respond or listen drowns out the spiritual participation that only comes through silencing one's senses, enabling us to offer ourselves with Christ to God the Father.
- "If anyone says that all Christians [lay people] have the power to administer the word [read at Mass] and all the sacraments [dispensing the Blessed Sacrament], let him be anathema."
--
Canon 10, Session VII, March 3, 1547
- Receiving Communion while standing reduces the sense of humility before one's Creator.
- What has always be taught as Sacrilege is now approved, recommended and common place - with Communion in the Hand . The extra-ordinary Eucharist Minister is now a "function" to be performed by just about anybody. The people at Mass no longer kneel, and why should they if it is only bread!
- The people rarely worship in Holy Attire or wear a veil.
Dressing Like a Man,
Dress up for Mass!)
- In the Novus Ordo Missae, women are now allowed in the sanctuary -- where they are forbiden to be.
"Let women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted them to speak, but to be subject, as also the law saith."
(1 Cor 14:34)
LANGUAGE
- "If anyone says that the Rite of the Roman Church, according to which a
part of the Canon is pronounced in a low tone, is to be condemned, or that
the Mass ought to be celebrated in the vernacular only...let him be anathema."
--
Canon 9, Session XXII, Sept. 17, 1562
- "The use of the Latin language, customary in a considerable portion of the Church, is a manifest and beautiful sign of unity, as well as an effective antidote for any corruption of doctrinal truth."
--
Pope Pius XII, Mediator Dei, par. 60
- "We are parting with the speech of the Christian centuries; we are becoming
like PROFANE INTRUDERS in the literary preserve of Sacred Utterance.... What
can we put in the place of that language of the Angels? We are giving up something
of priceless worth..."
--
Pope Paul VI , introducing the "Novus Ordo"
- Latin was indicative of the Unity of the Church. The vernacular is indicative
of the division, i.e., Babel.
"And therefore the name thereof was called Babel, because there the language of the whole earth was confounded: and from thence the Lord scattered them abroad upon the face of all countries."
--Genesis 11:)
- Even the documents of Vatican II state:
Particular law remaining in force, the use of the Latin language is to be preserved in the Latin rites."
Sacrosanctum Concilium, par. 36.1)
- The Church acknowledges Gregorian chant as specially suited to the Roman
liturgy: therefore, other things being equal, it should be given pride of place in liturgical services.
--
(Sacrosanctum Concilium, par. 116)
NON-CATHOLICS
- Martin Luther once said: "Tolle Missam, tolle Ecclesiam" - "If you take away the Mass, you take away the Church."
- Protestants themselves have said "the new Catholic Eucharistic prayers
have abandoned the false (sic) perspective of sacrifice offered to God." -- La Croix 12/10/69)
- "The liturgical reform ... do not be deceived, this is where the revolution begins. -- Msgr. Dwyer, Archbishop of Birmingham, spokesman of Episcopal Synod
OTHERS
- Cateshism of Trent (circa 1570)
"It must be taught, then, that to priests alone has been given power to consecrate and administer to the faithful, the Holy Eucharist. ..... this practice, as having proceeded from Apostolic tradtion, is to be religiously retained..."
--
The Sacrament of the Eucharist, Only the Priests have the Power to Consecrate and Administer the Eucharist
"... not only is the power of its adminstration entrusted exclusively to priests, but the Church has also prohibited by law any but consecrated persons, unless some case of great necessity intervene, to dare handle or touch the sacred vessels."

The Sacrament of the Eucharist, The Laity Prohibited to Touch the Sacred Vessels
- Peter Canisius, Doctor of the Church (1597)
"It behooves us unanimously and inviolably to observe the ecclesiastical traditions, whether codified or simply retained by the customary practice of the Church."

"It is unlawful to alter the established customs of the Church ... Remove not the ancient landmarks which thy fathers have set."

A Man-Made Liturgy ; A Man-Made Church ?
- Saint Vincent of Lerins
"What then should a Catholic do if some portion of the Church detaches itself from communion of the universal Faith? What choice can he make if some new contagion attempts to poison, no longer a small part of the Church, but the whole Church at once, then his great concern will be to attach himself to antiquity which can no longer be led astray by any lying novelty."
--
Commonitorium, Chapter 3, ยง7
- Pope Saint Pius X
"The Church has always condemned the principle of 'progress' in the sense of a change in the Faith, and has always held that the Faith is one and the same for all times, places and persons."
--
the Modernists (Pascendi)
- Pope Pius XII
The desire to restore everything indiscriminately to its ancient condition
(antiquarianism) is neither wise nor praiseworthy. It would be wrong,
for example, to want the altar restored to its ancient form of table;
to want black eliminated from the liturgical colors, and pictures and
statues excluded from our churches; to require crucifixes that do not
represent the bitter sufferings of the divine Redeemer."
--
Encyclical Mediator Dei (#62)
"This persistence of Mary at Fatima about the dangers which menace the
Church is a divine warning against the suicide of altering the Faith
in her liturgy.... In our future churches, Christians will search
in vain for the red lamp where God awaits them.""
--
on the message of Our Lady of Fatima, qtd. in Roche, Pie XII Devant L'Histoire
" I hear around me reformers who want to dismantle the Holy Sanctuary, destroy the universal flame of the Church, to discard all her adornments, and smite her with remorse for her historic past.""
--
as Cardinal Eugenio Pacelli, to Count Enrico P. Galeazzi
- Pope Paul VI
"A day will come when the civilized world will deny its God, when
the Church will doubt as Peter doubted. She will be tempted to believe
that man has become God, that His Son is merely a symbol, a philosophy
held by so many others, and in the churches Christians will search in
vain for the red lamp where God awaits them, like Magdalen weeping before
the empty tomb, 'Where have they taken Him?'"
--
last meeting with Jean Guitton, September 1977
"There is great unrest at this time in the Church and what they are questioning
is the faith. I am alarmed, when I reflect on the Catholic world, that
non-Catholic thinking sometimes seems to prevail within Catholicism and
it could happen that this non-Catholic thinking within Catholicism will
become stronger in the future. But it will never represent the Church's
thinking. A small flock must survive, no matter how small it may be."
--
Paul VI Secret (to Jean Guitton a few months before he died)
- Cardinal Ottavianni
"It is obvious that the New Order of Mass has no intention of
presenting the Faith taught by the Council of Trent. But it is to this Faith
that the Catholic conscience is bound forever. Thus, with the promulgation
of the New Order of Mass, the true Catholic is faced with a tragic need
to choose."
--
The Ottaviani Intervention, Chapter 6
"The Novus Ordo Missae... represents, both as a whole and
in its details, a striking departure from the Catholic theology of the Mass
as it was formulated in Session 22 of the Council of Trent... which, in
fixing the 'canons,' provided an insurmountable barrier to any heresy against
the integrity of the Mystery."
--
Letter to the Holy Father, 25 September 1969
"Will priests of the near future who have not received the traditional
formation, and who rely on the Novus Ordo Missae with the intention
of 'doing what the Church does,' consecrate validly? One may be allowed
to doubt it!"
--
The Ottaviani Intervention, para 29
- Cardinal Ratzinger (Prefect, Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith)
"Eucharistic devotion such as is noted in the silent visit by
the devout in church must not be thought of as a conversation with God.
This would assume that God was present there locally and in a confined way.
To justify such an assertion shows a lack of understanding of the Christological
mysteries of the very concept of God. This is repugnant to the serious thinking
of the man who knows about the omnipresence of God. To go to Church on the
ground that one can visit God Who is present there is a senseless act which
modern man rightfully rejects."
--
Die Sacramentale Begrundung Christliker Existend
- Archb. Annibale Bugnini (Freemason, Architect of the Novus Ordo Mass)
"We must strip from our Catholic prayers and from the Catholic
liturgy everything which can be the shadow of a stumbling block for our
separated brethren that is for the Prostestants."
--
L'Osservatore Romano, March 19, 1965
- Observations
There appears not to be a single heresy that is not embraced in the Church today.
The Novus Ordo is not One or Apostolic.
PRAYER
- The Canon, which had only 26 words added to it since the time of Christ, has been reformatted.
- The Canon of the Mass is now said aloud - which has been condemned.
- The words of consecration itself is surrounded by a lie (for ALL).
- The priest no longer gives the final blessing.
- No longer are the words of the Last Gospel read.
- No longer do the Priest and people pray the Leonine prayers after Mass.
- The new prayers are insipid and devoid of any sacrificial wording.
- 70% of the prayers have been ripped out. This grave omission leads us to believe that it is only a meal and not a sacrifice for the remission of sins.
PRIEST
- The Novus Ordo has eliminated such things as;
- Genuflections (which bespeak adoration of THE sacrifice) have virtually been completely removed -- leaving only three. (Even these now are omitted entirely!)
- the Sign of the Cross (many removed)
- purification of the priests fingers in the chalice, preservation from all profane contact of priest's fingers after Consecration,
- sacred altar stone and relics
- three altar clothes (reduced to one)
- offering of Christ as Victim (oblation) has been removed from the Offertory
all of which only serve to emphasize how outrageously faith in the dogma of the Real Presence is implicitly repudiated.
- The priest has now turned his back on God, and focuses his eyes not in the direction of God, but on man.
- The Novus Ordo does away with the Confiteor of the priest, makes it collective with the people, thus promoting Luther's refusal to accept the Catholic teaching that the priest is judge, witness and intercessor with God.
- His priestly character is obscured. There is a melding of the priestly function of the man who received Holy Orders and the laity who have become a priestly people by virtue of their Baptism. Via the common priesthood (baptized) all can offer sacrifice, whereas, only the Priest of the Hierarchical Order can offer THE sacrifice.
- The loose structure of the Mass, lacking precise rubrics, leaves the priest the oppurtunity to utilize novelties.
- The insertion of the Lutheran: "Prayer of the Faithful" in the Novus Ordo follows and puts forth the Protestant error that all the people are priests with no need for a priest to mediate between God and His people.
- The Novus Ordo gives us to understand that the people concelebrate with the priest -- which is against Catholic theology! All masses are public by nature. It always includes the Church Militant, Suffering and Triumphant.
- Many priest do not consume the Precious Blood, leaving the sanctuary after Mass, while the Blood remains in the Chalice.
PROPHESY
- Our Lady
"Rome will become the seat of the Anti-Christ."
(1846, LaSallette)
- Anne Catherine Emmerick (1820)
"Then, I saw that everything that pertained to Protestantism was gradually gaining the upper hand, and the Catholic religion fell into complete decadence. I saw again the new and odd-looking Church which they were trying to build. There was nothing holy about it....People were kneading bread in the crypt below...but it would not rise, nor did they receive the Body of Our Lord, but only bread. Those who were in error, through no fault of their own, and who piously and ardently longed for the Body of Jesus were spiritually consoled, but not by their communion. Then, my Guide, Jesus, said: 'THIS IS BABEL' "
Catholic Prophesy, p116
- Marie-Julie Jahenny (19th Century) Stigmatist
Our Lord:
-
"When the fatal hour arrives when the faith of my priests is put to the test, it will be (these texts) that will be celebrated in this second period... The FIRST period is (the one) of my priesthood which exists since Me. The SECOND is (the one) of the persecution when the enemies of the Faith and of Holy Religion (will impose their formulas) in the book of the second celebration."
-
I give you a warning. The disciples who are not of My Gospel are now working hard to remake according to their ideas, and under the influence of the enemy of souls, a MASS that contains words that are ODIOUS in My sight.
- Blessed Padre Pio
Obtained a dispensation to never have to offer the Novus Ordo.
The Old Mass
VALID and LICIT
- Pope Saint Pius V granted a perpetual indult, valid "for always," to celebrate the Traditional Mass freely, licitly, without scruple of conscience, punishment, sentence or censure. -- Papal Bull Quo Primum,
- The Traditional Latin Mass of Pope Saint Pius V has never been legally abrogated and therefore remains a true rite of the Roman Catholic Church by which the faithful may fulfill their Sunday obligation.
- During the recent negotiations between the Vatican and the society of Saint Pius X, Cardinal Castrillon Hoyos admitted reluctantly,
"Okay, we recognize that the Old Mass IS NOT ABROAGATED and is legitimate, but we cannot say it publicly because there will be too much of a rebellion, and difficuties with the bishops." -- The Angelus, April 2001, p. 16
- Cardinal Alphonse Stickler explained that he was one of a nine-member Commision of Cardinals appointed by Pope John Paul II to study the question of the Tridentine Mass. The nine-Cardinal Commission concluded:
a) The Latin Tridentine Mass has never been abrogated;
b) All priest have the right to offer the Tridentine Mass.
"...Therefore God shall send them the operation of error, to believe lying: That all may be judged who have not believed the truth, but have consented to iniquity."
2 Thessalonians 2:10-11
